Upon returning to Philadelphia, after a seven year absence, the owners of the featured project knew exactly where to look for a new house -- their old neighborhood of Chestnut Hill. They were fortunate enough to find a property down the street from their old house, but the 1960 era three bedroom brick house was not exactly their dream home.
Both the brick walls of the old house and the potential for living essentially on one floor appealed to the owners, as did the small cottage scale. A program was developed that included a larger kitchen and master bath and added a family room and study to the first floor. The second floor contains a second and third bedroom and bath.
The architects developed a scheme which preserved the intimate feel of the old house while adding 1,200 sq. ft. to it. Features and details were added giving the house a more traditional look on the exterior, with a light and open interior.
Susan Maxman Architectsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
The addition, built of frame construction and sheathed with cedar clapboards, extended the house to the rear of the property. French doors and casement windows connect the kitchen, family room and study to stone and brick terraces. The roof pitch of the old house was repeated in the family room addition creating a cohesive composition. Existing metal windows were replaced with wood windows similar to those used in the addition, thus unifying old and new. Windows are made with actual divided lights, giving the house a more traditional look appropriate to the neighborhood. Other traditional exterior features which were added include overhead and wall trellis and the replacement of the hood over the front door.

The interior of the house is more contemporary, with the plan of the kitchen, living/dining and family rooms being very open. Extensive use of French doors, windows and light wells in the kitchen and at the stair allow for an abundance of natural light throughout the house. Walls and trim are painted white. The use of custom millwork in the form of screens, built-ins and kitchen cabinetry give the interior architectural details and a character which had been lacking.
The goal was to use an integrated systems design approach to produce a home which would be highly resource efficient, affordable to both build and operate, healthful, and aesthetically appealing.
The 1,700 sq. ft. home, located in an 8500 DD (
F) New Hampshire climate, cost in 1985-86 $65,000 plus 2,000 hours of the owner's labor to build. This excludes the land cost and site development costs such as well and septic system. Valuing the owner's labor at $15/hour, the cost was $95,000, or about $56/sq. ft. Adding a contractor's overhead and profit brings this to $109,250, or just under $65/sq. ft.
This house is for a private client in Bedford, N.Y. on a 5-3/4 acre wooded site. Unlike SITE's past commercial clients, the owner and his wife wanted the exact opposite of high profile architecture and, in point, had requested that the residence integrate with the forest so completely that the final structure might be described as invisible. The clients also expressed a strong desire to live with nature and maintain total privacy...

The final concept is a complete response to the client's wishes. It is built in such a way that, when approaching the front of the building, it is difficult to discern where the house actually begins and where the forest ends. This has been accomplished by allowing the forest to penetrate the architecture in several layers.

Whenever possible, existing trees and vegetation have been preserved. When the spectator stands in front of the building, the first layer is natural forest, the second layer is a glass block wall with conventional shuttered windows, the third layer is more trees and bushes (behind the glass wall), and the fourth layer is an internal courtyard of still more forest.

Consistent with SITE's philosophy of architecture as the subject matter of art, the typology of the house is a simple ranch style, organized in such a way that the entire reading of the project's ideas is based on these conventions invaded by nature. It is hoped that eventually the house will be so consumed by the forest that it will become an organic part of its context.

The challenge of this project was to successfully transform a drab and mundane house into an inspired new home suited to the needs and tastes of its owners without completely obscuring the original house. The final solution makes this large house feel intimate, takes full advantage of a limited site and gives the owners a unique, nearly new house in their old neighborhood.

Resource efficiency means looking at more than just reducing heating energy consumption. It means using regionally appropriate strategies to reduce our demand on as many resources as possible. Toward this end this home is space efficient; made of durable materials; conservative of energy for heating, domestic hot water, and electrical use; conservative of water; incorporates food production and storage and includes a convenient location for recyclables..
